Stephanie KOURY, Deputy Special Representative for Political Affairs for Libya and Acting Head in the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), visited Operation IRINI Headquarters

Ms. Stephanie KOURY, Deputy Special Representative for Political Affairs for Libya and Acting Head in the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), visited the Operation EUNAVFOR MED IRINI Operational Headquarters (OHQ) in Rome.

She was welcomed by Rear Admiral Guillaume FONTARENSKY, IRINI’s Deputy Operation Commander, with whom she exchanged views on the ongoing situation in Libya and recent developments within Operation IRINI. Ms. KOURY also had the opportunity to meet the international staff and tour the Joint Operations Centre (JOC), from where the operation is conducted.

“IRINI is a complex and significant EU military operation under the EU’s Common Security and Defence Policy. It is the only international actor implementing the UN arms embargo on Libya.

Through its use of ships, aircraft, drones, and satellites, the Operation also provides continuous surveillance in the Central Mediterranean, monitoring air and sea lines of communication, and strengthening maritime security on Europe’s southern border, particularly on high seas off the coast of Libya, 24 hours per day, 7 days per week,” pointed out Admiral FONTARENSKY during the meeting.”
