Visit of the Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus in Rome H.E.Yiorgos CHRISTOFIDES
The Operation Commander, Rear Admiral Stefano TURCHETTO, met this morning the Ambassador of Cyprus to Italy, H.E. Yiorgos CHRISTOFIDES. The Ambassador was very pleased and impressed by the EUNAVFORMED commitment in supporting the enforcement of the UN arms embargo on Libya, the prevention of illicit export of petroleum and the disruption of the business model of human smuggling and trafficking.
During the event, The Ambassador and the Operation Commander shared their views on the activity and the situation in the Central Mediterranean. The visit included the Joint Operation Centre, where the ongoing Operation is controlled 24/7 and a meeting with Cypriot personnel employed in the Headquarters.
Cyprus is a very important contributor to IRINI. Currently 24 EU Member States are supporting the operation with personnel, air and naval assets.
