Visit of a delegation from the German Bundeswehr Command and Staff College“Führungsakademie der Bundeswehr”

On 6th February a delegation from the German Armed Forces Staff College had the opportunity to visit the IRINI Operational Headquarters (OHQ) in Rome, where participants were able to receive a detailed update on the activities currently underway and on future developments of the Operation.
Rear Admiral Guillaume FONTARENSKY, Deputy Commander (DCOM) and the OHQ staff were honoured to welcome the delegation.
The German General Staff College is highly regarded for its focus on preparing officers in advanced leadership, operational strategy, and decision-making. Since its establishment in 1957, the Führungsakademie der Bundeswehr has been successfully engaged in training senior military leaders for their key roles in the German Armed Forces, NATO and European Union.
During their visit, the German delegation had the opportunity to learn more about the tasks assigned to the Operation: IRINI’s core task is countering illicit arms trafficking in order to implement the UN arms embargo on Libya, while secondary tasks include gathering information on oil smuggling and human smuggling as well as providing capacity building and training opportunities for Maritime Libyans Institutions.
The visit was an excellent opportunity to demonstrate the strong European spirit that animates the Operation and to highlight its crucial role in monitoring the situation in the Central Mediterranean to ensure respect for international law and the safeguarding of EU interests.
